Frightening Substances in Automobiles

While everyone in the automobile industry and in regulatory positions in government are focused on the gas mileage that our new vehicles will get in the next few years or decades, perhaps their focus should be on something much more immediate and deadly – namely, the fact that many studies have shown that a majority of vehicles contain toxic substances that lead to long-term health problems in many of the people that drive cars and remain exposed for long periods of time to the toxic chemicals.

What Are These Frightening Substances in Automobiles?

These quite deadly substances that are in the vast majority of all automobiles including Mercedes, Volkswagen, BMW, Chrysler, Subaru, Toyota and Hyundai vehicles, are usually substances that are used in the materials of the manufacturing process like phthalates, bromine, benzene, asbestos, etc. These substances are found in great number in the dashboards, this seat covers, the armrests, and the other plastic parts of the vehicles. These substances go by many names, but the main way that they are inhaled into the human body is through dust. Mostly in older vehicles, asbestos can be found in brakes, drums, gaskets, hood liners, clutch plates, etc. Hobbyists and mechanics need to take extra safety precautions because they are more likely to be exposed to asbestos.

What Can These Dangerous Substances do to Me?

The diseases that these substances carry are not in any way to be taken lightly – they include mesothelioma, permanent liver damage, asthma, as well as many incurable, not to mention completely uninsurable gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases.

How Can I Keep These Substances Out of my Body?

What this means is that one of the easiest ways to stay away from most of the toxicity in these substances is to keep the inside of your car as clean as possible. If you have a dusty dashboard, then make sure to have it cleaned or clean it up yourself as soon as possible.

Another way to make sure that you do not inhale as much of these toxic substances that can be avoided is to make sure to keep your windshield washed all the time. When you are working on the car, make sure to wear a gas mask so as not to inhale any of the substances when you are around things like the brake pedals or the motor. These toxic substances also show up in those places as well as the many plastic ridden accessories that were mentioned in the paragraphs above.

How to Drive Down Your Motoring Costs

Car FuelThe cost of car ownership is currently at an all-time high; with fuel prices soaring, car insurance rising by around 44p per day, and the increase in VAT further exacerbating the situation, it seems that there is no end in sight.

Don’t worry though, help is at hand – and no I don’t mean in the form of the coalition government’s measly 1p per litre reduction in fuel duty (or the promise to postpone the planned 5p fuel duty increase) – but instead, in the form of this money saving guide to help you drive down your motoring costs.

So how can you cut the running costs of your vehicle? Let’s take a look at the 2 key areas below:

Fuel

* Shop around: the price per litre can vary greatly in your local area, so it’s worth shopping around before you fill up to ensure you get the best value for money. To save you the hassle, why not make use of a fuel prices website such as petrolprices.com.
* Modify your driving style: In order to get the best fuel economy from your car, it is essential that you avoid harsh acceleration and sudden breaking, aiming instead to read the road ahead to allow you to adapt your driving. Sticking to the speed limit will also save you money, as driving at just 10mph above the speed limit uses up to 10-20% more fuel on the motorway.
* Lift share: If you live close to a work colleague, or are able to pick them up on your way to work, arrange to lift share so you can cut your fuel bill in half.
* Servicing: Ensuring you have your car regularly serviced not only prolongs the life of your engine, it will also help to ensure your car runs at its peak efficiency, meaning you’ll get better fuel economy.
* Check tyre pressure: By making sure you keep your tyres inflated to your car manufacturers recommended levels, you’ll avoid lowering your fuel economy with under inflated tyres and having to purchase new tyres more quickly due to increased wear and tear.

Insurance

* Don’t stick with the same insurer: Each and every year, UK drivers waste billions by sticking with the same insurer when they could have sourced a cheaper renewal quote elsewhere. It’s vital you start looking for your car insurance at least a month before it’s time to renew.
* Compare, compare & compare some more: When you look for a new car insurance policy, it’s a good idea to compare a number of insurers (shortlist to at least 3 or 4) and make use of comparison websites to make it a whole lot easier. Don’t forget to also run quotes with a couple of insurers who don’t appear on comparison websites to ensure you get an accurate cross-section of the market.
* Improve your security: Insurers will usually give you a discount off your car insurance premium if you improve your security measures. This can simply be achieved by; using your garage (if you have one), installing an alarm or immobilizer, or by changing your stereo to one with a removable fascia.
* Keep your mileage low: your insurance premium is calculated on your risk to the insurer, therefore, the more miles you travel in your vehicle each year, the more expensive your premium. Over-estimating this amount can impact the price you pay, as can reporting an artificially low mileage (although the latter of the two will void your policy). Make sure you report your annual mileage as accurately as possible (try using MOT documents to give you an idea of your yearly mileage).
* Change your profession: Research has shown that your profession can have a big impact on the price you pay for your car insurance. If you state that you are a premiership footballer then of course your premium is going to increase. In real-world situations it really does make a difference too. Try changing your profession to see the difference it makes to a quote (don’t forget to keep it accurate though).

NHTSA Expands Ford Windstar Corrosion

NHTSA expands Ford Windstar CorrosionThe National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has opened a second investigation into 1999-2003 Ford Windstar minivans. The new probe has arisen amidst reports of front subframe corrosion that can cause the vehicle to lose steering. Apparently, a number of owners in salt-belt states have complained of front steering components rusting to the point of failure, causing a total loss of steering in the process. NHTSA will be looking into a total 900,000 potentially affected vehicles as part of the first stage of a process that could ultimately lead to recall.

As we first reported in May, Windstar minivans of the same vintage are currently under investigation for a similar corrosion concern in the rear of the vehicle. The government agency launched an investigation after receiving 234 complaints of the vehicles’ rear axles fracturing. Owners claim that the design allows for road salt and grime to collect in certain places, accelerating corrosion in the process.

Ford says that it is doing everything it can to cooperate with the investigation and address any design issue, should one exist. According to Automotive News, the Windstar, which was built between 1994 and 2003, has been the subject of a total of 10 recalls so far.

Top 5 tips when buying car insurance

This is a guest blog post on behalf of CarFinance247.

Car Insuance TipsShop around

Everyone is busy. Nobody wants to take time out of their day for mundane activities – but we suggest that you re-evaluate such ideologies. It’s too easy to just accept the renewal fee from your current car insurer. Just because you have an extra years no-claims discount doesn’t mean your insurer will pass the savings down to you. It’s best to shop around and look at what the competition are offering. A few minutes online and on the phones could save you a fortune.

Use comparison websites

We are living in technological times – so why not utilize what’s available? Long phone calls to each individual insurer can take forever, so while we don’t recommend cutting out the old school phone completely, we do suggest using the comparison websites as an extra tool in your armory. You receive a list of insurers, a list of prices and the ability to amend your information easily – just remember, though, that there are a few large insurers who don’t use the comparison websites, so it’s best to cover all the bases.

Haggle

Haggling is a technique most Brits don’t posses. It’s an international characteristic for most people around the world, but when it comes to the British, we have a reputation of just giving in and accepting whatever offer is put in front of us. Remember, insurance companies are battling for your custom – so haggle! We’re not saying you’ll always win, but there’s a good chance you will be able to reduce the premium to a more reasonable amount – and if nothing else, it will mean you’ve got one over on the insurers.

Smaller cars equal smaller premiums

If money is an issue – and let’s be honest it is for most of us, then it may be a good idea to swap your car. Car insurance prices are calculated from a number of components, and one of the major factors is the car itself – usually, the smaller the car, the smaller the premium. If you’re driving a Ford Focus, swapping to a Ford Fiesta would almost certainly reduce your premium from the car insurer. If you’re unsure what cars are low on insurance, look at the insurance group number the car has, the lower the better – this dictates the type of price you will pay

Pay annually

This may come as quite a surprise, but paying your car insurance in one lump sum annually will reduce your premium by a substantial amount. Why? Well, car insurers charge you interest when you pay monthly, and subsequently your payments increase – paying annually cuts out that interest and results in a cheaper premium.
